Amid Bursting Shells – Redditch Man’s Story of Life in the Trenches - Trooper Quigle
                                       th
who is serving with the 7 Cavalry Division and was formerly Redditch Inspector of the
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, writing to his wife, says; “I have had a
fearful time, and I am exceedingly fortunate to be alive. It has been simply terrific for us.
Every day it is a case of fight, fight, fight. Shells are always bursting over us.”

Describing the heavy fighting in which he took part, at the end of October and in the
beginning of November, he says the German artillery fire was magnificent – shells constantly
bursting all-round the British lines. The enemy also posted men behind farms for sniping
purposes, and it was dangerous to lift one’s head out of the trench for more than a second or
               two.

Since writing the letter Quigle has been wounded, and is in hospital at Nottingham.
