High Duty Alloys Redditch Heritage
HDA did not just do pistons for engines – here we have the wartime forging process for con-
rods. 1941
Other notable airframe parts made at Redditch
included Spitfire tail wheel forks and the V-shaped
spars that enabled Lancasters to carry bouncing
bombs on the Dam Busters raid.
The Dam Busters Bouncing
Bomb under Lancaster. The
arms holding the bomb were
forged in quick time at
Redditch. I cannot find my
original print of this photo so
have had to scan from a book
– not so good. However, can
see the chains which were
used to spin the bomb before
release. In the same way that
spin on a football or tennis
ball allows players to have
more control, spinning the
bomb helped it to ensure that
it would bounce in the right
direction.
