High Duty Alloys Redditch Heritage
The 12,000 ton press.
The structural work required raising the bay roof from 40 to 87ft and, as always with
maintenance and modification at the factory, this roofing work was undertaken during the
summer holiday shutdown. When the workforce returned the raised section had
corrugated sheet fixed on the top, but not yet to the sides, and needless to say it rained.
The night of August 16, 1952, however, had no ordinary rainstorm, delivering as it did the
terrible flooding experienced particularly at Lynmouth. Goodness knows how much water
came through the roof at HDA that night.
