The HISTORY of REDDITCH New Town
Roads & Transport - The Vision…..
The Vision for transport in the New Town included the following:
● The road system consists of district distributor roads, district feeder roads and local
housing, office and industry access roads. These roads are part of a central box from
which routes radiate to north, south, east and west.
● Major access for vehicular traffic to the site should be from connector roads from the
towns primary road to the east. These may be in the form of a loop but they should
not provide a through route for vehicles, other than public transport, as a short cut
between other parts of the town. The public transport services should have a link
through the centre not available to other traffic.
● Within the centre there should be some separation of the various classes of vehicles;
private cars moving to parking areas, service and goods vehicles, public transport.
● Parking areas for cars should be arranged so that no more than about 800 cars have
to use each exit point otherwise congestion will occur. Parking should be self-drive
since mechanical methods tend to be unpopular with users and there should be easy
access to the parked vehicle at all times for the storage of purchases. In siting the
parks it is important that the cars should not be allowed visually to dominate the
centre.
● The pedestrian approach should not be through a vast sea of parked cars as in the
American regional centres.
● Pedestrian access will be from the car parks and bus stops within the centre and from
the town footpath system.
● There must be the maximum separation of pedestrians and vehicles in the centre.
