The HISTORY of REDDITCH New Town
Roads & Transport - The Legacy…..
● The road system consists of district distributor roads, district feeder roads and local
housing, office and industry access roads are established and works very well.
● Major access for traffic to the town, and through the town leads to little congestion.
● Most houses are built on closes with no through traffic. It is mainly the pre-1960s
suburban roads which still experience through traffic. Some traffic calming schemes
have been implemented to alleviate problems.
● Vehicle - pedestrian separation has been achieved in most areas of the Town Centre.
● Multi-storey parking areas for cars have been arranged so that no more than about
800 cars have to use each exit point and occupancy rate monitoring shows that
these are never 100% full so there is always room whatever time you arrive.
● Pedestrian access to the town centre is via a footpath system.
● The railway service is regularly used by commuters, visitors and residents to and
from the town. Electrification was completed in 1992 and in 2014 major track
changes will increase trains from two to three per hour.
● Failure to fully complete the transport infrastructure due to finance limitation,
national & international events and actions by neighbouring authorities means some
improvements planned were never realised.
● Questions are constantly raised about road signage leading to the claim that Redditch
is hard to navigate.
● Constant changes in bus operators and routes have led to a perception of a poor
service in the town.
