Computers in the 1970’s - Our Automotive Roots
When formed in 1973, BL System remained focused on providing systems and
support services for the various divisions of British Leyland. This work
provided the sound basis upon which experience was gained by staff during a
time when the use of computing in manufacturing systems was expanding
rapidly. Here are a few examples of the work done by BL Systems - the grass
roots experience the staff gained which allowed them to expand and re-apply
skill learned to external customers when BS Systems Limited was formed.
Remember, the original document this data was taken from is probably 45 year
Where it all started - payroll
Most companies used computers
first for producing their payrolls and
this was true in BL. Most of us now
take computer based payroll
systems for granted—as long as our
pay cheque turns up on time! Over
the last three or four years,
Government policies and changing
of arrangements within our own
Company in the areas of social
benefit and bargaining reform, have
caused fundamental changes in the
way we process payrolls Major
alterations to the payroll system
have been necessary to cope with:
A new National Insurance and State Pension scheme
A Company-wide staff pension scheme
A totally new Works pension scheme
Four stages of Government pay policy
The affects of tax reform
A works sick pay make up scheme
This probably sounds a formidable list of changes even before one realises that
because of the evolution of BL Cars from a number of different companies over
the years, changes have to be made to something like 36 different payrolls.
