around 1890 by Temple Lushington Moore.

Life and Times of Cannon Newton
Locally Horace Newton is known for being the vicar of St. Stephen’s from 1892 until
1905, the building of Holmwood and for the rebuilding of St. Stephen’s church.
He was born in 1841 at Berkswell Hall, Warwickshire, the third son of William Newton
later of Barrells Park, near Henley in Arden.
He was educated at St. John’s College Cambridge where he was a foundation scholar and
graduated in Maths with honours in 1864.
His clerical career commenced in 1865 when he was ordained Deacon. The next year he
became Priest at St. Mary's Nottingham. In 1869 he was appointed vicar of Haworth in
