Ida Parkinson
Macmillan Nurse
Ida Parkinson was instrumental in setting up the
Primrose Hospice and in 2011 was presented with
the Douglas Macmillan Award by Redditch Mayor,
councillor Anita Clayton. In 1983 she was appointed
as the first Macmillan nurse in Worcestershire. A
tireless fund-raiser.

Life and Times of Ida Parkinson
Born on a farm in Ireland, Ida ran away from home to train as a nurse at Belfast
Children’s Hospital – nursing was not considered a respectable profession in those days.
It was six months before her family knew where she was. On qualifying as a State
Registered Nurse she took a job at the Halifax General Hospital. District Nurse training
took place at St Cross Hospital, Rugby, where she began working in the community.
