Sir Thomas Windsor

7th Baron; 1st Earl of Plymouth (2nd creation)

The Windsors, and Windsor-Clives were English
nobleman who owned and lived at the Hewell Grange
estate in Tardebigge, Worcestershire.

They owned vast area of what we now know as
Redditch, but were also generous beneficiaries giving
both land and monies as the town grew and expanded.

Life and Times of Sir Thomas Windsor

Son of the Hon. Elizabeth (daughter of Henry 5th Baron) and Dixie Hickman. Thomas
changed his name from Hickman to Windsor in order to inherit the Barony.

m (1) 1656 Anne Savile (1634 - 1666)

Children: Mary (d 1694); Other (1659 - 1684); Ann (died in infancy).

m (2) 1668 Ursula Widdington (not to be confused with Judi Dench's character in Ladies
in Lavender)

Children:Dixie (d. 1743); William (d. 1682); Andrews; Ursula (d. 1737); Elizabeth
                (d.1736); Thomas (d. 1738)

He succeeded to the family estates at Hewell in 1645, the same year he distinguished
himself at the Battle of Naseby. He also impressed Charles 1 by relieving the Royalist
garrison at High Ercall.

The title baron Windsor was called out of Abeyance on 16th June 1660.

From 1661 to 1663 he served as Governor General of Jamaica.

Sir Thomas was interested in navigation of the Warwickshire Avon. Restoration of the
Pershore sluice enabled navigation from Tewkesbury up as far as Evesham. The rights to
the Avon navigation would be passed to his children, Andrews and Thomas, in the will of
Ursula.

He was an important aide to Charles II. In December 1682 he was created earl of
Plymouth. This was the second creation; the first in favour of Charles Fitzcharles, the
illegitimate son of Charles II, became extinct on the childless holder's death in 1675.
