Artist, Tutor and Archaeologist
James was a bright young man who became tutor to
the Bartleet family. He was asked by Robert S.
Bartleet to excavate and document Bordesley Abbey
in 1864. The book he published on this topic has
become the definitive early work on this topic.
He later taught at the National School and the
Literary and Scientific Institute.
After a short period in Spain he returned to London 1832 - 1899
and was an artist and editor. When he returned to
Redditch he lived at “The Castle” in Crabbs Cross. The cover of Woodwards Book on
