Mavis Bennett, born Annie May Bennett in 1900 in 1900 - 1990
Redditch, to parents Frank R. Bennett, needle
finisher, and Annie. Mavis started singing in local Mavis Bennett
concerts at the age of nine and in amateur operatic (Source: Wills Cigarette Card)
productions at the age of 14. She went to
Birmingham to study singing and subsequently
joined the D’Oyly Carte Repertory Company chorus in
March 1921. She appeared on the concert stage and
in several London shows and became an overnight
sensation through the medium of radio.
