Redditch has responded well to the call to arms, fully 1,500 men having gone
for service in the Army or Navy. Recruiting is still energetically carried on, however, and at
the request of Major Reddie, the recruiting officer for Worcestershire, an official committee
has been formed to undertake the work of recruiting in Redditch and the outlying parishes
comprised in the Redditch Petty Sessional Division.

The Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch Messenger – Saturday 24 October
1914
A party of 40 Belgian refugees, who arrived on Wednesday, are being housed at
Roxberry House, which has been kindly placed at their disposal by Major E. S. Tunbridge. The
necessary furniture and supply of food has been contributed by the townspeople. This is the
second party of Belgians who have found a haven of refuge in Redditch. The first party,
numbering about 20, are being accommodated at Chapel House, Evesham Street.
