Headless Cross Soldier Killed – After waiting for seven months for tidings of their
son, Mr and Mrs Carr, of Headless Cross, Redditch, received official information on February
th
th
24 that Private Carr (4 Worcesters) was killed last August at the Dardenelles. In October
his comrades sent his parents word that Private Carr was all right, but since then until a
week ago no news had been received. Private Carr served in France early in the war, and in
February, 1915, was invalided home suffering from enteric and bronchitis. He returned on
th
April 9 and early in the following month was sent out to the Dardenelles. He was reported
th
missing as from August 6 . Private Carr was an old Volunteer, having served 12 years.

(On Ancestry site, Military records it stated that John Carr (16376) 4 Battalion,
th
Worcestershire Regiment, born and enlisted in Redditch, died 6 August 1915 at Gallipoli
and classed as killed in action)
Remembered on St Luke’s war memorial, Redditch.
(On 1911 census John Carr aged 30, Fish Hook Maker, lived with his wife Eliza and son and niece at 148
Feckenham Road, Headless Cross.)
