               Hunt End Soldier Killed –Mrs Saunders, of Hunt End, has received official information
                                                                                        th
               that her son, Driver Hubert Saunders, was killed in action on September 20 .  Driver
               Saunders enlisted two years ago and had seen much fighting.  An officer, writing to his
               mother, said he was a fearless soldier, always ready in time of need.  A truer friend no man
               ever had.

               (On Ancestry site, Military records, DVR Herbert Saunders, DVR, (830144), Territorial Force
               Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery, born and enlisted in Redditch, killed in action,

               20  September 1917, France & Flanders.  He seems to have joined the Territorial force in 1912 as
               Hubert Saunders, aged 18 years 9 months and was living in Ipsley Street, Redditch.He was awarded
               the British War Medal and Victory Medal.)
               Remembered on St Luke’s war memorial, Headless Cross, Reddtch.

               April 1917, aged 22.  Draft for BEF 10  July 1917 and then joined 1  RM Battalion, 30

               August 1917 – 26  October 1917 wounded.  In notes he had been a needle scourer and his
               father George lived at 100a Evesham Road, Headless Cross.  His wife was Mrs Florrie Simons
               of 100a Evesham Road.
               (On Ancestry site find a grave Private John Thomas Simon born in 1894, came from Redditch,

               Buried Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
               Remembered on St Luke’s war memorial, Headless Cross.
               (John Thomas Simon was born in 1894 in the Alcester District and he married Florence M. Cale in 1917 in the
               Alcester District.  On the 1911 census John Thomas Simon aged 16, Assisting in the Business, lived with his
               parents, George Nathan, Hardware dealer and Flora Louisa and his siblings at 100a Evesham Road, Headless
               Cross.)
