Military Cross for Astwood Bank Officer – Mr C. F. Vachell, K.C. , Recorder of
Gloucester, and whose residence is “Brackenhurst,” near Astwood Bank, has been informed
that his only son, Leiut. F. Vachell, has been awarded the Military Cross for distinguished
service in the field. The Lieutenant was educated at Shrewsbury and Trinity Hall, Cambridge.
He took his B.A. degree in 1912. He was called to the Bar in June, 1914, but never practised,
as he re-joined his old troop of King Edward’s Horse a day before the outbreak of war. In
December, 1914, he was given a commission and went out to France in July 1915. He had
seen continuous fighting. He was to have had a short leave but unfortunately met with an
               accident.
