Redditch Local History Society Remembering Redditch Residents & WW1
This service was unique in the history of the town. The clergy, the Rev. L Bradley (Vicar) the
Rev. G. W. Clarke, the Rev. Canon Newton, with the four free Church Ministers, the Revs. B.
Crosby, H. Gregory Absalom, James Seden, and J. Pearce shared the service. Addresses were
given by the Rev. H. Gregory Absalom and Mr A. C. Millward (Chairman of the Redditch
Urban District Council), the service proving to be a fitting conclusion to the celebrations of
the signing of the Armistice by the German envoys.
Services of thanksgiving were held on Monday at the Wesleyan Church and United
Methodist Church. At intervals on both days peals were rung on the Church bells.
At a special meeting of the Redditch Urban District Council, on Tuesday, a resolution of
profound thankfulness to Almighty God that the war was over, and the reign of peace begun
with an expression of gratitude to the forces and workers of this and allied countries, was
passed, and copies ordered to be sent to his Majesty the King and the Prime Minister.

Tardebigge – The news was received with great rejoicing at the Tardebigge V.A.D.
Hospital. At the Parish Church, on Wednesday evening, the usual weekly war service of
intercession was turned to one of thanksgiving. It was attended by a large congregation,
including the staff from the V.A.D. Hospital and all the wounded soldiers who were not
confined to bed. The service commenced with the singing of the National Anthem and
concluded with the Te Deum. The Rev. F. G. Ellerton (Vicar) gave a stirring address.
