Local Notes – Our annual summary of events to be published next week, show how
largely 1918 has been a war year – the last of the series as we all believe – with a general
election in the last month which caused little more than a ripple of excitement. Throughout
th
the year, until the ever to be remembered Armistice Day on November 11 , the casualties
continued to be heavy, and even now disease, until this war a greater danger to the soldier
than shot or shell, continues to make mournful additions to the list of those who will never
return. Side by side with the inevitable feature of national strife is the encouraging record of
the efforts made by the people at home to ease the lot of the suffering. Bromsgrove is far
from being a rich district but it can claim a highly creditable record in the matter of assisting
the Red Cross, the Prisoners of War, and other war funds. The War Loan appeals also were
well responded to, but while helping the nation subscribers assured for themselves a return
of over five per cent, and no self-sacrifice was demanded of them in this direction. It is
gratifying to know also that in spite of the extra efforts which all have been called upon to
put forth, our chief institutions, from the Cottage Hospital downwards, have been well
maintained and that in this respect we end the war little, if any worse off than we
commenced it.
