Armourer’s Crew, Albert Leslie Harris, Service No M/14742, R.N., H.M.S. “Montagua.” Killed

by explosion, following collision 19 March 1918. Aged 20, son of Albert and Esther Lavinia
Harris, of Other House, Other Road, Redditch. Served on H.M.S. “Barham” at Battle of
Jutland. Body not recovered for burial. Remembered on Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

(On 1911 census Albert Leslie Harris, aged 13, scholar, lived with his parents, Albert and Esther Lavinia and
siblings at Other House, 98 Other Road, Redditch.)
HMS Montagu was part of a convoy operating out of Queenstown, Ireland when she was accidentally struck by
the American ship USS Manley. The collision caused the detonation of the depth charges on Manley and the
resulting explosion caused extensive damage to the stern of H.M.S. Montagua, killing a number of those on
board including Albert Leslie Harris.
