Redditch Peace Celebrations – Separate Rejoicings Deprecated – Redditch is
threatened by a plethora of peace celebrations. A few weeks ago it was decided by the
Urban District Council that the cost of the local rejoicings should be defrayed out of the
rates, and a sum of £250 was provided. A Celebration Committee has been formed, at a
meeting of which, on Thursday night, Mr F. J. Whiteley presiding, it was reported that at
Headless Cross and other parts of the district arrangements were being made to hold
separate celebrations. At Headless Cross a committee had been formed, a band engaged,
and collections made. A letter was received from the Secretary of the Headless Cross
Committee (Mr A. C. Gregory) asking that two representatives should be appointed on the
Redditch Committee, and the names of Messrs. G. H. Rollins and A. C. Gregory were added.
A resolution was passed to the effect that if collections were made for separate rejoicings
they were not authorised by the official committee and if any money was required beyond
that voted from the rates, public notice would be given through the Press. Mr Whitely was
appointed chairman of the committee, and Mr G. W. Hobson secretary.
