       Moons Moat

       This image taken from
       Google Maps shows that
       Moons Moat, a listed
       Ancient Monument, has
       been sympathetically
       integrated into an urban
       landscape. The trees
       along Church Hill Way are
       also part of the original
       hedgerows through which
       still runs the brook which
       supplied the moat with
       water.

       This illustrates the
       importance placed on
       maintaining the existing
       environment of the
       locality as the New Town
       was designed and built.
Moons Moat before the New Town development, surrounded by
       The Moons Moat fields.
       Conservation Group is a
Below, right, after development surrounded by houses
       group of volunteers who
       take a specific interest in
       the well being,
       maintenance and
       promotion of the Moons
       Moat site. They monitor
       its condition, arranging
       with the Borough Council
       its maintenance and
       protection.

       Regular reed clearance is
       needed to stop the Moat
       from silting up again
       although the level of the
       stream feeding the moat
       has now fallen such that
       feed water only comes
       from surface drainage.
