Poet

Walter Savage Landor was one of the leading poets
in England who once lived at Ipsley Court.

He was thrown out of two schools, and his parents
banished him from his home. In Oxford he shot
another student and quarrelled with bishops, Lord
Chancellors, dukes, lawyers and many other
important people, not only in England but in France,
Italy and Wales. His marriages always ended in
disaster.

He fell in love with Llanthony Abbey in
Monmouthshire, in Wales, a ruined abbey but he
abandoned the abbey and left his mother to pay his
debts fleeing to Spain to fight Napoleon. He died in
Italy aged 89.

His best-known works are ‘Imaginary conversations’
where he imagines two notable people talking to
each other.
