Post Office and the War – Delivery of Letters Delayed – Delivery of Letters Delayed –
In no department perhaps has the effect of the war as regards depletion of staff been more
felt than in the Post Office. Many thousands of post-men are fighting for their country,
whilst a large number of clerks have been withdrawn for positions in the royal Engineers
corps and Wireless Telegraphy Department. As regards the local Post Office, ten of the
officials have enlisted, and the duty of carrying on the work by temporary force of little or no
experience has been no slight task, especially as since the war commenced the work has
been made heavier by the payment of separation allowances, acceptance of war loan
payments, and the traffic in letters and parcels for the Expeditionary Force. It has now been
decided to further reduce the local staff in order that more men may be available to serve
their country, and as a result the first delivery, as from Monday next with the obvious result
that delivery will be made later than now in several parts of the district. This will doubtless
be an inconvenience to the public, especially business men, but it is expected that they will
suffer the conditions without complaint, in the circumstances.
