A Redditch Man – A man from the Redditch district is reported to have been in the
battle cruiser Queen Mary – Joseph Yoxall (25), of 1 Britten Street. He was a stoker, and was
married at Christmas whilst home on leave.

action, Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916 on HMS Queen Mary, (body not recovered for
burial). Mother was Emily of 1 Britten Street Redditch) Father was Jesse Yoxall.
Remembered on St Stephen’s war memorial, Redditch.

(The battle cruiser HMS Queen Mary was launched in 1912 and was involved in the Battle of Jutland 31 May
1916 and hit twice by the German battle cruiser Derfflinger during the early part of the battle and her
magazines exploded shortly afterwards sinking the ship.
Her wreck was discovered in 1991 and rests in pieces, some of which are upside down, on the floor of the North
Sea. Queen Mary is designated as a protected place under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986 as it is
the grave of 1,266 officers and men. Only 20 were rescued.)
