               Celebrations in Midland Towns – The news at Redditch was announced by the
               blowing of the sirens at the electric light works and the factories.  No arrangements had
               been made for a general holiday but before the steam bulls had ceased blowing the schools
               were emptied and the thousands of employees at the factories had ceased work and
               thronged the central parks of the town.  Within a few minutes of the receipt of the good
               news the bells of the parish church of St Stephen’s were ringing joyous peals, flags and
               bunting appeared as if by magic, and the principal streets of the town were given a gala
               appearance.  Shortly before 2 p.m. a procession was formed at the Council House, headed by
               the town band, and marched to the Church Green.  A short service of thanksgiving was held.
               The celebration concluded with a gigantic bonfire at night.
