Tardebigge Soldier Killed – Private William Collins, Worcestershire Regiment,
Tardebigge – Mrs F. Collins, Hewell Lane, Tardebigge, has received the sad news of the death
of her elder son, Private William Collins, Worcestershire Regiment, in the following letter
from Sec.-Lieut, H. Garrett. “It is with expressions of deepest sympathy that I have to inform
you of the death of your son, Private Collins, of B Company. He was a member of my
platoon, and a nicer or more pleasant fellow it would be hard to find. I was extremely sorry
to lose him, for he was an excellent soldier, and extremely popular with his comrades, three
of whom were killed by the same shell. He was badly wounded about 9.0 pm. on Sunday,
th
June 9 , and succumbed to his wounds at midnight. We buried him in a small military
cemetery just about 2000 yards behind the front line, on the Monday morning.” Private
th
Collins was 28 years of age. He joined the Worcesters on June 6 , 1917, and had been in
France 8 months. Before enlistment he was employed at the B.S.A. Works, Redditch.
