               The Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch Messenger – Saturday 13  July

               Crabbs Cross Soldier Killed – Mrs Lee, the Slough, Crabbs Cross, has been officially
               informed that her youngest son, Private J. W. Lee, of the Royal Berks Regiment, has fallen in
                                               th
               action.  In the fighting on June 7  he was so severely wounded that he died before he
               reached the dressing station.  He was only 19 years of age, and previous to the war took a
               keen interest in cricket, and was an active member of the local Salvation Army.  This is the
               second son Mrs Lee has lost in the war.

               (On Ancestry site Military records, Joseph Walter Lee, (43571) 2/4  Battalion, Princess
               Charlotte of Wales’s (Royal Berkshire Regiment), born in Astwood Bank, resided in Redditch,

               enlisted in Worcester, killed in action, 7  June 1918, Western European Theatre.  Formerly
               (51993) Devon Regiment.)
               A Walter Lee was remembered on St Luke’s war memorial, Headless Cross, Redditch.
               (On 1911 census Joseph Walter Lee aged 12, lived with his parents Stephen and Mary Ann Lee and siblings 9
               The Slough, Crabbs Cross.  His brother George Lee aged 20, cycle finisher was one of them.  He died in 1917.)

               (On 1911 census Albert Barker aged 11, scholar, lived with his parents Reuben A. and Fanny Barker and siblings
               at Webheath Lane, Webheath.)
