Church Road - Former Literary and
Scientific Institute
The entrance to Church Road used to look so
different.
The Literary and Scientific Institute, opened 1885
and built by public subscription, on the North
corner is shown below before it was extended up
to the Church Green West building line as you see
it today. This building was the hub of adult
education in the town up until the new town
expansion.
