Census returns showed that the accommodation was used by members of the police and their
families. In 1901 James Broome, Alfred Bartleet, James Porter, Charles Bevan and Frank Weaver
were single and living in the Constables’ Quarters. John Holloway was a police sergeant and with
his wife and son resided in the Inspector’s Quarters. Inspector Richard Beal and his wife and
daughter also lived in the police station. Inspector Beal had been in Redditch since 1900, but in
1901 he moved to Acock’s Green to act as the newly appointed superintendent of the Yardley
Division. He was replaced by Inspector Hayes from Worcester.³⁵
By 1911 Alfred Hayes was the Redditch Police Superintendent. He, his wife and three children,
and Inspector William Wagstaff, and his wife and five children resided at the Church Road Police
Station. Constables John Green, William Bishop, John Lovejoy, were single, and lived at the Police
Station, as did Constable Albert Fry, a widower. When the 1911 census was taken it was the
head of the household who completed the form. Therefore Constables Albert Cope and Herman
Gittus, Sergeant Henry Haines and their families may have lived in Police Station accommodation,
even though they wrote that they lived in Church Road. In 1916 Samuel Davis was the
Superintendent and William Wagstaff was still Inspector. There were two sergeants and thirteen
constables.
