The HISTORY of REDDITCH New Town
The Legacy…..
● Redditch has facilities for all major sports within the town.
● Although not a full Olympic pool, there are swimming facilities available to the public,
sports groups and schools.
● Dual-use sports facilities have been realised with the inherent benefits to the public and
schools.
● In the Abbey Stadium we have both indoor and outdoor facilities which are the envy of
neighbouring towns.
● Despite losing the traditional cinemas, the multi-screen complex in the Kingfisher Centre is
the equal of those in neighbouring towns. Now, with the growth of the Hub , and new
restaurants being built, the night economy of Redditch should improve.
● A wide range of clubs and societies exist in the town, many using local halls & community
facilities as their meeting places.
● There are many Social clubs around the town and
we have a theatre as the Jewel in the Crown .
● The Megabowl only lasted a few years. With a
population of 70,000+ why?
● Many of the newer public houses have failed to
provide the atmosphere enjoyed in the towns
many traditional ale houses.
● Repeated schemes to bring increased facilities to
the Abbey Stadium such as a Ski Slope/Snow
Dome all fell by the way side.
● The town centre is still predominately a day-time
economy and it s difficult to see how the much
requested night-time cafe culture will be
realised.
The Olympic Torch travelling through
Redditch was a once-in-a-lifetime
event for many in 2012.
