The HISTORY of REDDITCH New Town
Redditch Cinemas - The Select Kinema
In a newspaper clip from 8th November of 1913 a Mr Hobson is now giving notice of his
intention to apply for a cinematographic licence for said picture house now being erected
in Alcester Street. This is to be Redditch’ first purpose-built Cinema.
In 1926 Picture House cinema was up for sale. What had happened to the Tredgolds,
and what happened to the cinema for the next 25 years I don’t know but in the 1950’s
the Select changed to 'The Regal' when it was one of the three cinema's in the town. It
was the oldest and the smallest and known as the 'flea-pit'.
It was demolished in the early 1960's just before the advent of the new town.
