Redditch Petty Sessions – Wednesday – Before Mr J. Morgan (in the chair), Colonel H. S.
               Bartleet, Messrs. F. C. Dolphin, H. Adcock, G. E. Leach, and J. Guise.

Application for Cinema and Stage Play Permit. – November 1913
Application was made to the magistrates by Mr G. W. Hobson, on behalf of Mrs Rebecca
Treadgold, for a license for a cinema show, and also a license for the performances of stage
plays for a new theatre in Alcester Street, Redditch. – Mr Hobson said plans were submitted
to the Bench in May, and intimation was given that, subject to the building being
satisfactory, the application would be consented to. – A committee of magistrates had
inspected the building, and he agreed to carry out alterations which the magistrates
suggested. – Mr F. J. Whiteley, on behalf of the Palace Theatre Ltd., opposed the application
for a license of stage plays, but did not object to the cinematograph license being granted.
He pointed out that on the plans the building was described as the Electric Picture Palace. A
large sum of money had been spent upon the Palace Theatre, and the Bench laid down
certain stringent regulations to prevent danger in the case of fire. He contended that the
Bench should insist upon as much money being spent in this direction in one case as in the
other. – No objection was offered by the police, and the applications were granted subject to
the alterations recommended by the magistrates being carried out to the satisfaction of
Superintendent Davies before the opening of the building for performances.
