Picture Show - Objection to Exhibition on Christmas Day – 1913
On behalf of the proprietors of the Palace Theatre, Mr Hobson mentioned that it was their
intention to have an exhibition of pictures at night on Christmas Day, and a series of sacred
concerts, commencing on the Sunday after Christmas, at 8.15 p.m. Nothing in the nature of
theatrical performances would be given. – The Chairman said he knew from another quarter
that the matter would be mentioned. The Bench were powerless, but they viewed with
disfavour the proposed exhibition of pictures on Christmas Day. – Mr Hobson said Christmas
Day was a day of rejoicing. Many of the people who would attend at the theatre on
Christmas night would be walking about the streets if something of the kind was not
provided. – The Chairman said the majority of the Bench thought otherwise and the matter
               then dropped.
