High Class Concert at Redditch – January 1914
Music lovers were exceptionally well catered for at Redditch on Thursday night when the
most important concert that had been given in the town for many years took place at the
Palace Theatre. It was arranged by Mr Carton Fletcher, of Redditch, in conjunction with the
Birmingham Conservatoire of Music, and the concert was made notable by the contributions
of Mr Michael Zacharewitsch, the eminent Russian violinist, and Mr Felix Salmond, the well-
               known violoncellist player.
Great interest was taken in the concert, and the attendance was highly satisfactory, the
visitors including many of the principal residents in the town and district.
Mr Zacharewitsch gave an artistic rendering of the Beethoven’s Sonata in C Minor, “Rondo
Capriccioso” (Saint Saens), and the “Imagination” number from his own repertoire, in all of
which he had the assistance of Mr G. O’Connor-Morris, while he also played,
unaccompanied, the less well known “Chaconne” of Bach.
Mr Salmond’s contributions comprised the Concerto in A Minor (Greig), a tuneful aria of
                               th
Matheson of 17 century date, and selections from Schumann and Bridge.
The solo pianist was Mr Lionel Field, of Redditch, and an interesting programme was
completed by songs by Miss Amy Carter (contralto) of Birmingham who was accompanied by
Miss Doris Wainwright of the Birmingham Conservatoire staff.
(Michael Zacharewitsch was a well-known Russian Violinist who played at the Proms several times)
(Felix Salmond was a well-known British Cellist)
