Empire Day Performance – May 1917
To celebrate Empire Day the scholars of the girls’ department of St Stephen’s Schools gave
performances on Saturday and Wednesday afternoons in the Palace Theatre. The
performances set forth the woman in her many positions in history as warrior, abbess,
religious education, prisoner of Christianity, missionary, Queen regent, empress, and war
worker. Patriotic songs and scenes and dresses of the periods made the performances more
real. There were large audiences, and the undertaking was a success throughout.
