Stores management in the Jaguar, Radford, plant
The computer based goods receiving and stores management system is one of
the mainstays of the pre production and material control management
operation at the Jaguar. Radford. Plant It controls between 5,000 and 6,000
different parts and has details of
each consignment of each part in
the Plant All material
movements amounting to some
10.000 to 12.000 per week are
recorded on the system.
The heart of the system is a
dedicated small IBM computer
driving television type terminals
and printers located in 8 stores
and material control offices in
Radford This dedicated
computer is linked via the
microwave system to the general
purpose computers in the CDC
This is an early example of a
system using dedicated in plant
computers and it began
operation in 1975 Since then the system has been operating continuously
on-line to the various control offices and its reliability is proven by the fact that
it has been available tor use more than 99% of the time
The system checks that incoming consignments are required, in accordance
with planned stockholding; allocates a unique reference number and specifies
the location for storage. The location is then confirmed and movement
documentation for the first process produced. Each consignment is tracked to
ensure all pre treatment, sample and inspection procedures are enforced
Further, the system satisfies Zero D' Batch Control requirements, together with
those of the Ministry of Defence standard 05.21 and has been a significant
factor in ensuring the Radford Plant's acceptance as a Ministry approved
supplier.
