Redditch People
Rev. Robert Alexius Hoole Pope
Founder of Mount Carmel Church
The Rev. Robert Alexius Hoole Pope was born about
1794 and died the 3rd August 1841. He served
eleven years as an active pastor at Coughton Court,
which belonged to Sir Robert Throckmorton, Bart.
In 1834 after a great many difficulties he founded - 1841
Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Redditch. At the
opening of the Church, the Grand High Mass was Mount Carmel RC Church c1905
sung by the Rev. Mr. Pope, accompanied by the choir (Source: Mount Carmel web site)
of St Peter’s chapel, Birmingham. He served there
for six years but his health started to fail him and he
retired to Coventry for peace and solitude.

Cllr. Arthur F. Price
Redditch Mayor in 1985
Arthur was born in 1927 in Kings Norton to parents
Arthur and Adelaide Price. He joined the army in
1945 and trained as a wireless operator. For forty
years he was an electrical engineer.
