He was murdered on 28th February 1885 near Weatheroak Hill, Worcestershire by the
notorious poacher Moses Shrimpton. He was buried at St Leonard’s Church cemetery,
Beoley.

This was classed as one of the most shocking murders that had for many years been
committed in the county, and had taken place during the dark hours of Saturday
morning, 28th February 1885, Eagle Street Lane, near Weatheroak Hill, where a
policeman named James Davis of the Worcestershire constabulary, lost his life in a
desperate single handed struggle with an assailant, later identified as Moses Shrimpton.
No other Worcestershire policeman has been killed on duty since.
