Harry Guise

Editor of The Redditch Indicatoe

Harry Guise was editor of the Redditch Indicator for  No Picture Available
40 years from 1901 to 1940s. He was also a leading                - 1949
Tenor Soloist, involved in local politics and a keen
cyclist.

His father was William Guise, a needle manufacturer
which employed seven people, all family members.
When the company got into debt, Harry and other
members of the family worked hard and succeeded
to pay off all the debts.

Harry was a loving family man with his wife Ellen
they had three daughters.

He was also a keen debatorand involved himself in
many aspects of local community life. In forty years
as editor of the Indicator, he never missed writing
the weekly leader. His brother Jesse was a jeweller
in Evesham Street.

Life and Times of Harry Guise

1881 Census records

          Harry Guise aged 17, clerk lived with his parents William Guise aged 52, born in
          Oxford, Needle Manufacturer, employing 7 people, mother Eliza J. 50 and siblings
          at 26 Hewell Road, Redditch. Harry’s mother and siblings were all born in Redditch.

1891 Census records

          Harry Guise aged 27, Manager Needle and Fishing Tackle, lived with his wife Ellen
          aged 27 and daughter Nellie M., aged 2. They lived 8 Hewell Road, Redditch.

1901 Census records

          Harry Guise aged 37, Weekly Newspaper Editor, lived with his wife Ellen aged 37
          and daughters Nellie M. aged 12, Winifred K, aged 6 and Eileen S. aged 2 in
          Bromsgrove, Road, Redditch.

1911 Census records

           Harry Guise aged 47, born in Redditch, Newspaper Editor, lived with his wife Ellen
           aged 47, daughters Nellie Moira aged 22, Ledger Clerk and Typist, Needle
           Manufactory, Winifred Kathleen aged 16, Learner in Civil Service, Post Office and
           Eileen Sylvia aged 12, scholar. They lived Glevum House, 68 Bromsgrove, Road,
           Redditch.
