Alfred William Budd Hayes

Alfred was born in 1857 in Frimley in Surrey and
grew up in a very poor background. His father,
Joseph, roamed around Brittain as a garderner. He
fisrt worked as the gamekeeper at Grafton Manor
where he met his wife Mary. Unable to get
accommodation for the family he joined the Police
force in Worcester in 1880. He quickly rose through
the ranks and was transferred to Redditch in 1901 to
become the towns first Superintendent of Police.

He died of kidney failure in office at the police station
in 1913. Alfred and Mary had six children.

Life and Times of Alfred William Budd Hayes

Death of Superintendent Hayes of Redditch – Yesterday (Friday) afternoon the death
occurred at his residence at Redditch of Superintendent Alfred Hayes, of Redditch Police
Division. Deceased, who was 56 years of age, had been in an unsatisfactory state of
health for some time, but he was able to attend to his duties until a few days ago, and
his death was unexpected until yesterday morning. Mr Hayes who was a native of
Bromsgrove, and a brother of Mr Herbert Hayes, Clerk to the Registrar of the Bromsgrove
County Court, was appointed Superintendent of the Redditch Division twelve years ago
and had held the position with marked ability. Of a courteous and genial disposition, Mr
Hayes was held in high esteem at Redditch. He took a keen interest in local affairs, and
his loss will be greatly felt. Deceased is survived by a widow and three sons and one
daughter, all of whom are grown up.
