Bertie Crewe
Designer of the Palace Theatre
Bertie Crewe was one of the most dynamic architects
of the 1890s-1900s and specialised entirely in
theatres and subsequently cinemas. He was chosen
as the architect of the Palace Theatre in 1913. The
Palace is now one of only 6 working Crewe theatres
left.

Life and Times of Bertie Crewe
Described as a miniature opera house of classic design and seating, at that time 660, it
boasted every modern facility of the day. The auditorium was built on two levels, with
stalls and one balcony, with one large box on either side. Mr H K Hayles, a potteries
entrepreneur, was the Managing Director of the company, the Redditch Palace Ltd. and
it appears that the cost of building the theatre (which was cited as £9,000) may have
been raised by private subscription.
