Treat to Wounded Soldiers – Through the generosity of Mrs Cheape, “The Squire,”
of Bentley Manor, a number of wounded soldiers from the Village Hall, Tardebigge, spent a
very enjoyable afternoon on Tuesday. The party were conveyed to Bentley in a brake, and
two motor-cars provided by Mrs Cheape. The weather was all that could be desired. Tea
and refreshments were provided on the lavish scale usual at Bentley. The billiard room was
thrown open to the visitors, and this popular game was greatly enjoyed. There were other
forms of amusements provided, including a ham-cutting competition, which was greatly
enjoyed and caused much amusement. The Redditch Town Band had been engaged to
furnish music, and the selections played were much appreciated. – The Squire expressed the
pleasure it gave her to be able to contribute to the comfort and enjoyment of those who had
faithfully served their country, and hoped they would all recover their usual health as far at
that was possible. Three rousing cheers were given for “The Squire,” who was thanked for
her kindness and generosity. Mrs Cheape has also been a generous contributor to the
comforts of the wounded soldiers at the Village Hall, and many a ride through the pleasant
country lanes have they enjoyed in her motor-cars. An early start was made for the Hall
which was reached soon after seven.
