Military Medal For Headless Cross Soldier – Private Sydney Mayneord, of
Headless Cross, has been awarded the Military Medal. Private Mayneord is in the London
Regiment. He is 20 years of age. He joined the West surreys, and was afterwards
transferred to the Londoners. The medal was awarded for devotion and services to his
th
captain on June 8 , the day when the big explosion took place. Mayneord says in a letter
that they were all out a few minutes before 3.0 o’clock that morning, and two or three
minutes later the earth was so shaken that it was like being later the earth was so shaken
that it was like being on a rocking horse. His instructions were to stick to his captain at all
cost, and he was sent with message after message, going over the top every time. He had
scarcely any rest for forty-eight hours, being engaged with the captain when not carrying
messages. He was kept going by a few drinks supplied to him. When the Londoners were
relieved the captain and Mayneord acted as guides. After the other regiments had got into
the trenches Mayneord went back with his captain. In one attack Mayneord was slightly
gassed.
