Soldiers’ Dogs from the Front – Official plans have been completed to help the men
serving in the British Army on the various fronts to bring home the dogs who have shared
with them the dangers and sufferings of the Great War. This is of particular importance in
view of the Order recently issued by the board of Agriculture and Fisheries with reference to
the prevention of the smuggling of dogs into the country, and the consequent fear of
introducing Rabies.
In order to help soldiers who are not in a position to pay the fees which the official
quarantine period of six months involve, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
Animals has undertaken with the approval of the Army Council and the Board of Agriculture,
to be responsible for the expense of quarantining these dogs.
The dogs will be repatriated by the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, and the Society has made
special arrangements with the Dogs’ Home at Battersea, and will erect new kennels at the
Home’s Quarantine Station at Hackbridge, where the dogs will be kept during the necessary
period of quarantine.
