The HISTORY of REDDITCH New Town
Methodist Church, Evesham Road, Headless Cross
The first Chapel opened in 1827 in Evesham Road on the present site. Then in 1873 a
new Chapel was built to accommodate the growing congregation. However it was built
to a poor standard and in 1895 the roof and gables collapsed due to severe winds. The
present church was then opened in 1897. Now closed as it joined St Luke’s Church in
2009 to form an Ecumenical Church called The Bridge, which is now based at St Luke’s.

Apostolic (Bishop) of the Midland District. Until 1948 the Parish began a long association
with the Benedictine Abbey of St Gregory at Downside, near Bath. Then for the next 20
years the priests came from the Abbey of St Michael and the Angels, Belmont, Hereford.
When Redditch was designated a New Town, in the mid 1960s, the town was to expand,
increasing the number of Catholics in the area, Belmont, felt it was time to hand over the
care of the Parish to the Archdiocese of Birmingham. This happened at the start of 1968.
