Redditch People
Life and Times of Thomas Haines
Thomas Haines was born the Redditch area to parents Thomas Haines and Susannah nee
Hollington. He married Caroline Duggins, in 1865 in Birmingham, daughter of James
Duggins, Temperance Hotel Keeper, Evesham Street and Sarah nee Turner. Thomas and
Caroline Haines had four children.
On the various census, Thomas was classed as Tailor and Clothier at 38 and 40 Evesham
Street, Redditch. In the 1873 Littlebury’s Directory he was classed as Tailor, Outfitter,
Hatter and Woolen Draper By the 1892 Kelly’s Directory Thomas was classed as Clothier
at 40 Evesham Street and he was then living at 26 Worcester Road, Redditch.
Thomas Haines died 15th January 1914 at ‘The Limes’ Worcester Road, Redditch. At the
time of his death he was the oldest member of the Redditch Urban District Council, its
vice president and had been for 3 years its chairman. He had also been chairman of the
directors of the Redditch Building Society for 34 years

He was leader of the Liberal Democrats group on the
council and a councillor for Winyates and chairman of
Redditch Arts Council.
