Redditch Soldier Killed – Son of Inspector Wagstaff – News has been received from
st
the War Office by his relatives that Private H. Wagstaff of the 1 Battalion Worcestershire
Regiment, formerly of Redditch has been killed in action, having been shot through the head
whilst serving in the trenches. Private Wagstaff, who was eighteen years of age, was the
son of Inspector Wagstaff, of the Redditch police force, who was at one time stationed at

Bromsgrove and at Droitwich. He joined the 6 Battalion Worcestershire regiment on
st

September 4 , and was transferred to the 1 Battalion eight weeks ago. Another son of
Inspector Wagstaff is also serving with the colours. Much sympathy is felt with Inspector
and Mrs Wagstaff in their bereavement. Before he enlisted Private Wagstaff was employed
by Messrs. Herbert Terry and Sons.

Harry Wagstaff of the 1 Batallion Worcestershire Regiment Service No 17847, born in

Oldbury, resided in Redditch, enlisted in Redditch and was killed in action on 24 February
1915 in the Western European Theatre. Remembered at Le Touret Memorial, France
Frank H. Wagstaff is remembered on St Stephen’s war memorial, Redditch.
(On the 1911 census Frank Harry Wagstaff, aged 14, lived with his parents William and Amelia Wagstaff and
his siblings at The Police Station, Church Road, Redditch and William was an Inspector of Police.
