Headless Cross Soldier Prisoner of War – Bible Stops Bullet – Mr and Mrs H.
Evans, Chapel Street, Headless Cross, have received a letter from their son, Pte. T. E. Evans,
th
67312, Royal Devons, who was posted as missing on July 28 , saying he is wounded and a
prisoner of war in Germany. While serving in Egypt a Bible was sent out to him at his
request, but was not delivered, at the battalion, was on its way back to France. He received
the Bible, however, in France, and carried it about with him. The bullet which caused his
wounds struck the Bible, broke its force, and only a slight wound was the result. According
to Private Evans’ letter the shot would have undoubtedly proved fatal had it not been that it
struck the Bible, thus deflecting its course.
