Parliamentary Recruiting Committee - and Councillor Eldred Hallas, of
Birmingham Recruiting Meeting – Under the auspices of the East Worcestershire
Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, two patriotic demonstrations took place in the Public
Hall, kindly lent by Mr Irving Bosco, on Sunday night. There were crowded attendances, Mr
E. Moule presided. Patriotic songs were rendered by Miss Mona Magnet, of the Alexandra
Theatre, Birmingham, and addresses were given by Councillor W. H. Lord (Chairman of the
East Worcestershire.

George William Strain had enlisted 1 April 1908 at the age of 35 in the Territorial Army, 3
Worcestershire Battery, RTA, and at this time was a Cycle worker at B.S.A. Co. and lived in
Crabbs Cross. Promoted to corpl. in 1913. Served in the war as a corporal in Royal Field

Artillery (South Midland) Brigade. George William Strain died 31 January 1915 at home as

he had been discharged from army 12 October 1914 as medically unfit for service. He
served for 6 years 190 days. His father was Alfred Strain of Crabbs Cross.
George Strain is remembered on St Luke’s war memorial, Headless Cross.
