Webheath Sergt. Major Killed – On Thursday in last week Mrs Andrews, Jubilee
Cottages, Webheath, received official confirmation that her husband, Sergt.-major Andrews

(7237), of the Worcestershire Regt., was killed in action on August 22 . Sergt.-major
Andrews had only been at the front in France for a short time, and was leading his men into
action when he was instantaneously killed. He was 35 years of age, and had received
promotion while at the front. The deceased was in the regular army, having served five
years in India and a number of years at Malta and adjoining depots. He was sergt.-
instructor to the King’s Norton volunteers for some time, and in the early days of the war
came to Redditch as recruiting sergeant. He was a finely built man, and was a fine soldier.
One of his brothers died from the effects of wounds in Manchester hospital in September,
1915.

Tardebigge.
(On 1911 census John William Andrews aged 30, Machinist (Cycle Works), lived with his wife Jane at 4 Charles
Street, Headless Cross and he was a Machinist, Cycle Works.)
